And it came to pass, when the sun went down and it was dark…
Have you ever received a precious promise from the Lord? Maybe an assurance from Him that He is going to work some difficulty out. Or you see His promise just about to be fulfilled…and then it seems like things go dark?
Where is He? What is He doing? Why isn’t He doing anything?
Take heart! It can be at the darkest times that God will do the greatest things. Abram was expecting to enter into a covenant with the Lord, to confirm His word. But Abram was not expecting the covenant to be completely and totally one-sided!
God made a covenant with Abram—but God was the only One to walk between the offering God told Abram to prepare. Abram has no responsibility in this agreement—NONE! Only the opportunity to believe God.
And the same could be said for the New Covenant. Jesus entered into a covenant for us. He offered up His body to be torn in two, creating the way—the ONLY way—for us to enter into an everlasting covenant with Him.
And in this covenant, we have no contribution, no responsibility—only the opportunity to believe.
