On the same day the Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying: “To your descendants I have given this land…”
There was nothing inherently extraordinary about Abraham. He was a lot like us—fickle and fearful at times…failing again and again in the very thing he would ultimately be known for—faith. But God chose Abram. God called to Abram. God came to Abram—again and again—to show Abram that He is the fulfillment of Abram’s greatest need at any given moment. And yet, even after all that…Abram again faltered in his faith and asked God, “HOW…how will I know FOR SURE?”
Abram wanted confirmation for the confirmation.
See, God had already given Abram His Word. And since it is impossible for God to lie, God’s word SHOULD have been enough. BUT…God graciously gave Abram exactly what he was asking for—confirmation of the confirmation—so that Abram would have strong consolation.
God graciously gave Abram two unchanging and unchangeable things: His word and a covenant to confirm His word. Now, that covenant was completely one-sided—totally and wholly dependent on the character of God…and God alone. Abram had no responsibility in the covenant…only the opportunity to believe God and to take Him at His word.
What a gift that God gave to Abram! He didn’t have to go to such great lengths to convince Abram…and yet He did.
What a gift God gives us! He has graciously given us His promises in His word AND the confirmation of the confirmation by making an everlasting, one-sided covenant with us through Jesus—a covenant where we have no responsibility, only the opportunity to believe God and to take Him at His word.
