After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, “Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.”
The word of the Lord came to Abram and said, “Do not be afraid, Abram…”
Why? Because Abram was afraid! He just defeated four Babylonian kings and kingdoms. They could come and kill him and his family at any moment.
But the word of the Lord came to Abram and said, “I am your shield.”
Why? Because God intended to be the very fulfillment of Abram’s greatest need at that moment. And at that moment, Abram needed protection.
“Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield…”
In the midst of our mess, our fear, our lack of faith, our depression…God gives us great, precious, and powerful promises in which it is impossible for God to lie. Though it may not make sense to us, and though we can’t see how it’s all going to work, we can trust His promises because He has given us His word.
