“And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.” –Genesis 16:2
Abram had a responsibility to lead his family. Yes, he could appreciate, sympathize, and even empathize with Sarai’s pain. But at the end of the day, even if it was difficult, Abram had the responsibility to lead his family in trusting and obeying God (which is faith).
But…Abram would submit to Sarai’s scheme to try to help God fulfill His plan for them. Unfortunately, this appeasement backfires on Abram and Sarai resents Abram and blames him for the outcome of her plan!
“It’s all YOUR fault, Abram!” And it actually really is. Husbands, we have the God-given responsibility to lead our families in faith—which means that sometimes we do not give them what they want, but rather what they need.
Abram is learning this lesson…and so are we. We have the benefit of learning from Abram’s experience so that we can lead our families in faith…by faith. Listen to our time studying Genesis 16 and learn from Abram’s painful mistake.
